Phonics Word (File Folder or Flannel Board) Games / Activities
I finally started making some phonics  learning games.  (It has been awhile since I first thought of this idea.  Sometimes I get ideas on my pages before I ever get around to making them.  :o) )

I will add more ideas when I make them.

Note: Use these on a table or floor, wall, as file folder games, or flannel board games.  If it is for flannel board activities, place a piece of double sided sticky tape on the back of each piece and a piece of interfacing on the tape.  (You can use magnets for the wall or file folder games or sticky velcro for flannel  board activities or file folder games.)

Have the child put the prefix (beginning sound) and suffix (ending sound) together.  For example, have the child hold the cards and put the words together and say, "p" "ig" "p" "ig", ... "pig" (or for any other words).  You can even have two people do it together (one says the prefix and the other says the suffix and both say it  together when the word is completed).  You can be standing somewhat apart (or across the room) and do this phonics activity.

Choose which word ending you would like to make.  Choose a pattern that is in that word group (I choose an egg pattern for - ick endings and a pig pattern for - ig endings.)  You can use a pattern from the web (you might need to reduce the size), cookie cutters, coloring pages, etc.)  If using a cookie cutter, puzzle piece, etc., trace the pattern.  In the center of the pattern, draw a line: zigzag, straight, curved, etc.  Cut the pattern and the center line out.  Place the pattern onto a piece of heavy weight paper (or other paper).  Cut around the pattern.  Cut one side of the pattern (the right side for suffixes and the left side for prefixes).  Cut the number of sides you need to make the words (e.g. 16 for - ick words).  Write the suffix or prefix on the pattern piece (e.g. - ick, etc. on the right or choose prefix words). Laminate using clear laminate paper (I buy mine at Wal-Mart.  If you have a laminate machine, us that instead.)  Write the list of words onto a section of an index card.  Place the pieces and word card into a small ziplock bag.

To play the game:  Have the child put the prefix (beginning sound) and suffix (ending sound) together.  For example, have the child hold the cards and put the words together and say, "p" "ig" "p" "ig", ... "pig" or for any other words.  You can even have two people do it together (one says the prefix and the other says the suffix).  You can be standing somewhat apart (or across the room) and do this phonics activity.

- ick Word Game / - ick Phonics Game
Use the small pattern from Egg Arts and Crafts (or make your own or use another egg pattern).  Draw a zigzag line across the egg pattern.  Follow the above instructions.  Here are some words for - ick: brick, chick, click, flick, kick, lick, quick, nick, pick, Rick, sick, stick, tick, thick, trick, wick.

-  ig Word Game / - ig Phonics Game
Find a pig pattern (or make draw your own pig pattern).  Draw a line, zigzag, or other type of line across the pig pattern.  Follow the above instructions. Here are some words for - ig:  big, dig, fig, jig, pig, twig, wig.

Phonics Ideas
- Use clipart of different objects.  Place an object picture and the following for "at":  picture of a bat, cat, fat (something), hat, mat, pat (patting something), sat (something sitting), and then __ at for each pictures

Use clipart of one object that ends with ending.  ladybug template for __ ug.  Have a picture with a bug, etc. and then __ ug on a flashcard (index card).

pig template for __ ig.
sheep template for __ eep.

Phonics Activity
You can use the activity book: "My Phonics Word Book" by Learning Horizons for this activity.  Take the stickers that are in it and place each word ending sticker on the right side of a 3x5" index card.  Cut the card in half and place the sticker in the middle of it.  Laminate.  Hole punch two holes on the left hand side of the word ending card and the matching pictures.  Place a twist tie through each hole and tie off.  Write the beginning letter on the card with a permanent pen or marker.  Have the child go through each set of cards and read each word.

You don't have the sticker books, you can use coloring pages, flashcards, etc. on my theme page (you will need to reduce the size of the images) or stickers to make your own flashcards.  Glue or stick onto index cards.

Spelling Game
Glue pictures of objects on index cards (you can cut the index cards in half).  For colors, cut out different pieces of different colors of construction paper out and glue it onto index cards.  Write a number of words on index cards (place each letter in a square).  For example, P-I-G.  To preserve them, laminate or cover with clear contact paper.

For beginner spellers:
How to play the game:  Have the child spell the word and then say the name of the object.

Here are some themes you can do: ABC (objects from A-Z), animals, bears (links under "Bear Game"), colors, farm animals, foods, fruits, insects, numbers (1, 2, 3,...), vegetables, etc.  Go to my theme page for pictures or draw them yourself.

For more advanced spellers:  Have the picture cards facing down.  Have them choose a card.  Have them spell the word and say the object.

You can also do this in another language.

Vocabulary Builder Game

Find As Many Words As You Can In A Word

(Here is a game that I remember doing in grade school. You can do it with your children or students.)

Grade Level: Elementary

1. Write a word down or have your children or students come up with a word.
2. Have them write the word down on a piece of paper.
3. Have them find as many words as they can in the word.
4. Have them share with everyone what words they have come up with.
